Frequently asked questions

What is PROLUMO® POWER PACK and what does it do?

PROLUMO® POWER PACK is a 14-tube paste supplement formulated for performance horses. It delivers standardized Notoginseng extract (1.245 g per 15 cc half-tube) containing Notoginsenosides Rg1, Rb1, and R1. PROLUMO supports innate immune response and helps reduce exercise-associated oxidative burden on the pulmonary vasculature — particularly relevant for horses at risk for Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH).

What is EIPH in horses?

Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage is bleeding from the pulmonary capillaries into the lower airways during strenuous exercise. It affects 55–95% of Thoroughbreds in race conditions when measured by endoscopy, though visible bleeding from the nostrils is much rarer. EIPH is graded 0–4 on the standard endoscopic scale developed by Hinchcliff and colleagues. Most cases are sub-clinical and detected only through post-race diagnostic evaluation.

How do I administer PROLUMO?

For initial administration, give 1/2 tube (15 cc) by mouth twice daily for 14 days. For maintenance, give 1/2 tube (15 cc) by mouth once daily. The 14-tube pack provides 28 days of maintenance dosing. Always follow veterinary guidance and product labeling. For use in horses only.

What is Notoginseng and why is it in PROLUMO?

Notoginseng (Panax notoginseng) is a botanical traditionally used for circulatory support. Its primary active compounds — Notoginsenosides Rg1, Rb1, and R1 — have been studied for their effects on vascular endothelial function and antioxidant activity. In PROLUMO, standardized Notoginseng extract provides 1.245 g of the active saponins per 15 cc half-tube dose, supporting pulmonary vasculature in horses under high exercise demand.

Is PROLUMO compliant with racing rules?

Notoginseng (Panax notoginseng) is not currently listed as a prohibited substance by the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) or the FEI as of the most recent published lists. However, racing rules vary by jurisdiction and change over time. Trainers should consult the current rule book for their specific jurisdiction and competition class, and confirm with their veterinarian before using any supplement near competition. PROLUMO is manufactured under NASC Quality Seal standards.

How is PROLUMO different from Lasix (furosemide)?

Lasix (furosemide) is a prescription diuretic with the strongest peer-reviewed evidence of reducing EIPH severity. It is administered intravenously 4 hours before exercise and works by lowering pulmonary arterial pressure. PROLUMO is a nutritional supplement, not a pharmaceutical, and is intended for ongoing supplementation to support pulmonary function — not as a race-day replacement for Lasix. Many trainers use both approaches together where racing rules permit.

Can I use PROLUMO with other supplements?

PROLUMO is compatible with standard equine nutrition programs including Vitamin E supplementation, omega-3 fatty acids, and electrolyte products. As with any supplement, introduce one product at a time and monitor your horse's response. Always consult your veterinarian about supplement combinations, especially when managing a horse with diagnosed EIPH or other respiratory conditions.

How quickly will I see results?

Notoginseng-based supplementation is not an acute-effect intervention; it works through ongoing nutritional support over weeks. Most trainers complete the 14-day initial dosing protocol followed by ongoing maintenance dosing for 4–8 weeks before evaluating effect on training and race performance. Post-race endoscopic evaluation by your veterinarian is the most objective way to assess change in EIPH severity.

Is PROLUMO safe for breeding horses?

Safe use in pregnant mares and breeding stallions has not been established. PROLUMO is labeled for use in performance horses. If you are considering use in a breeding horse, consult your veterinarian first.
